Buying an engagement ring is easy with Far East Gems & Jewellery. *all figures here are given to give you an idea of the price but it is always subject to change due to the market conditions.
Getting an engagement ring can be a fun and exciting experience. It’s best to take 1-2months of planning and preparation before getting the ring. At Far East Gems & Jewellery we will give you an experience that is enriching, fulfilling, and most importantly help you express your love for your fiancee through the engagement ring. Here are some steps to set you off!
1. Set your budget. (solitaire diamond rings are more costly compared to using gemstones)
You can buy a pretty decent solitaire diamond ring for $800 – $1000. It would be something like GIA certified 0.30ct D – F VS1 – 2 Excellent cut diamond with a simple white / yellow gold setting in any of the shops in Singapore. You can probably get a decent looking coloured stone solitaire ring with 18k white gold from $500.
If you’re looking at a 0.5ct solitaire diamond ring, its best to set aside about $2500 for a decent colour, clarity & cut. Due to the different grading standards set by each individual labs, the prices for the same 4C specifications can vary greatly. Rule of the thumb is how much you pay for is how much you can expect.
For coloured stones, the range really varies as some gemstones are less expensive (a few dollars to tens of dollars per carat for amethyst, citrine, etc) to the more expensive (a few thousand per carat for no-heat rubies, sapphires, etc). If you’re looking at something more unique, you can look for jadeite or even alexandrites or paraiaba tourmalines.
A big deciding factor on whether to get a diamond ring or a gemstone ring depends on your girlfriend. From the customers I have served, 2 out of 10 would choose a gemstone ring, the remaining 8 would choose a diamond ring. It would be best to drop hints to your girlfriend and try to see what she wants before deciding.
Lastly, the choice of metal to make your ring also affects the price. Platinium rings are most resistant to scratching and stay white longer but they cost about 3 times the price of white gold rings! 18k gold would cost more than 14k gold or even 9k gold. They each got their own pros and cons. All this information can be found on the internet.
You can visit forums like www.pricescope.com or www.proposalring.com to find out more.
2. Look around for a design.
The best place to look for a design is the internet (you can do a google image search, e.g. type “engagement rings”, you would get a lot of pictures which you can choose). But keep in mind, whatever you see is on the screen and some of the perspectives might look different in real life. For instance, a client of mine wanted to have oval diamonds for a certain design she saw on the internet but later she realise that it was actually round diamonds. The diamonds looked oval due to the lens of the photographer’s camera.
Some designs done for costume jewellery are too costly or rather impossible to do on 18k gold as gold is much harder than the material used in costume jewellery. Also, the setting style in costume jewellery is to look good, but not secure therefore they can achieve a certain look which 18k gold jewellery can’t. You won’t want your diamonds to drop out of the setting don’t you?
3. Figure out your girlfriend’s left ring finger’s ring size.
Some of clients tried using string to measure their girlfriend’s ring size but it is highly inaccurate. I had a client who gave me a ring size 8 sizes bigger than his girlfriend’s actual ring size!
One way to do it is, while going shopping together, stop by some jewellery store and pretend to get jewellery for her mother as a birthday present, look for some rings and ask your girlfriend to try on the rings. You can ask the sales staff to help you measure the ring size, etc… You get the point.
