Design Statement “Mother bearing a child in her womb, feeding and protecting the baby. Baby in the womb feeding on the mother through the umbilical cord. Keeping a fetus safe in the womb in these days is not an easy affair, the daily products/ food being consumed contains chemicals that might jeopardize the life of the fetus. When the fetus is in danger, the mother’s life is not spared it then become lives threatening pregnancy . This delicate mother-child relationship is intertwined, any harm to one might bring harm to the other therefore this outer layer of pregnancy – the mother’s belly is the first line of defense to the mother and child. The 9 months pregnancy is like a body adornment that serves as an armor to both. Diamonds are added on the reverse side of the body adornment which symbolizes the baby, the adornment made from silver is worn like a cuff to the body like pregnancy being bonded.”

The HRD Awards is a competitive forum organised every two years by HRD Antwerp for talented jewellery designers. Its goal is to inspire creativity in the design of contemporary diamond jewellery.

The competition aims at extending the limits of the modern diamond jewel and avant-garde ideas. The contest also seeks to promote diamonds in general and Antwerp in particular as a “centre of excellence.”
